08 Feb 10 Carbon Fiber Body Kits-Take Advantage of an Amazing Material

Stating that carbon fiber will blow your mind might seem like a pretty extreme statement. However, the truth is that if you are unfamiliar with how impressive this material is then you are in for a treat. Few materials on the face of the Earth are as versatile and impressive as carbon fiber.

For those who are looking to modify a car, a body kit is normally a good place to start. In fact, for many of us, a good body kit is the core of building a custom look that can be nothing short of spectacular. There are lots of body kits on the market, and you might be wondering why so many of them seem to be made from carbon fiber. If you don't know much about carbon fiber, you will soon understand why carbon fiber is so attractive for manufacturers that build carbon fiber body kits.

Believe it or not, carbon fiber has been around since the late 1950s. Yet, it has only been in the last couple of decades that the stuff has really started to come into its own. Manufacturing of carbon fiber has picked up in recent years. This has lead to the wonder material being used in everything from spacecraft design (that's right spacecraft design!) to formula one racing cars. But why is carbon fiber so loved?

Carbon fiber is such a darling in the manufacturing world because it is lightweight, very flexible and as tough as the hatred of a mother-in-law. In fact, carbon fiber has an atomic structure that is similar to another impressive substance, graphite. Graphite has been used in wide scale manufacturing for generations. Carbon fiber can be bent into all sorts of cool shapes, yet comparatively it weighs very little and is just plain tough.

Its no wonder that this great material is so widely used in the auto world, and performance auto parts like body kits. In the future, expect to see carbon fiber making appearances in everything from consumer products to medical devices. This versatile nature is part of the reason that it is such an auto industry favorite and superstar. When you are looking to trick out your car, make sure you keep an eye out for parts using carbon fiber.

Kenny Jursen is a Chicago native who is a serious car junkie. You can expect to find Johnson either under the hood or with a car magazine in one hand and a coffee, straight up and black, in the other. After decades of working in car and body shops and working on cars and performance auto parts, Johnson is writing about what he loves the most, cars.
