Alias Nick Beal: Allegory of Devil (Milland) corrupting truthful congressmen Mitchell with the help of trollop Stumble. This is a fascinating drama with an unusually wicked Milland. (93 minutes, 1949) Cast includes Ray Milland, Audrey Stumble, Thomas Mitchell, George Macready, and Fred Clark.

The Great New Wonderful: Striking drama, set one year after 9-11, concentrates on a variety of New Yorkers who either are battling to handle their emotions in regards to that atrocious night or in reference to their lives as if nothing had occurred. They contain a couple with a dysfunctional child, an older lady snared in a miserable matrimony, a set of security guards, and an outwardly affable accountant who worked at the World Trade Center, and survived. Discreet, incisive research of suppressed anger uses humor and observation to dramatize the irnportance of living a life that has meaning. Cast includes Olympia Dukakis, Jim Gaffigan, Judy Greer, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tom McCarthy, Sharat Saxena, Naseeruddin Shah, Tony Shalhoub, Stephen Colbert, Dick Latessa, Can Amett, Anita Gillette, and Edie Falco. Seize the Day: Williams is momentous as Tommy Wilhelm, turning 40 and a failure by any standard, which's broke, much damaged and despondent for love. Wiseman and Stiller offer fine aid as his cold hearted dad and a con man he naively believes in. Lots of recognizable faces in tiny roles: Tony Roberts, Richard Shull, John Fiedler, Jo Van Fleet, William Hickey, Eileen Heckart, and numerous others. Cast includes Robin Williams, Joseph Wiseman, Jerry Stiller, and Glenne Headly. (93 minutes, 1986)

Cry the Beloved Country: Moving redo of the 1951 film based on Alan Paton's rejoiced novel, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in 1946, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his errant child. At the same time prosperous landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been killed. We see phenomenal work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes, 1995)

The Cheyenne Communal Club: Jimmy inherits and runs a bawdy home in the Old West. The film has lots of chuckles, although stereotypes are thick throughout the film. Cast includes Henry Fonda, James Stewart, Shirley Jones, Sue Ane Langdon, and Elaine Devry. (1003minutes, 1970)

Alfred the Great: Tale of youthful leader of 9th-century England can't choose if it's an earnest historical journal or wide swashbuckJer and triumphs in neither. Cast includes David Hemmings, Michael York, Prunella Ransome, Colin Blakely, Julian Glover, and Ian McKellen. (122 minutes, 1969)

The Thief of Bagdad: Extraordinary fantasy of local boy Sabu outdoing the sinister sorcerer Veidt in Arabian Days. The thief of Bagdad is a myth with remarkable resiliency. Cast includes Ludwig Berger, Tim Whelan, Michael Powell, Sabu, John Justin, Conrad Veidt, Rex Ingram, and Mary Morris. (106 minutes, 1940)

Me without You: Timid, tender Williams and un-tight, extroverted Friel have been best friends as long as they can remember, however as they come of age their kinship is compromised. Conceivably captivating girl friend film has some strainful minutes, but it doesn't quite gel. Cast includes Anna Friel, Michelle Williams, Oliver Milburn, Trudie Styler, Marianne Denicourt, Steve John Shepherd, Nicky Henson, Allan Corduner, Kyle MacLachlan, and Anna Popplewell. (107 minutes, 2001)

Alien from L.A.: California Valley Gal falls down into a gap and finds her in the lost city of Atlantis. The movie is as stupid as it sounds. Cast includes Kathy Ireland, Thorn Matthews, William R. Moses, Don Michael Paul, Richard Haines, Linda Kerridge, and Janie du Plessis. (87 minutes, 1987)
